Fundraiser for GiveDirectly

Dan’s Seville Marathon Fundraiser

I’m raising funds for GiveDirectly, a global nonprofit that gives money directly to people living in extreme poverty with no strings attached.

Why? For three reasons:

  1. I wanted to help those who need it most (including refugees or those in emergencies).
  2. Those people most in need are much better placed than me to identify what it is they need. In GiveDirectly’s own words: “Cash allows individuals to invest in what they need, instead of relying on aid organizations and donors thousands of miles away to choose for them.”
  3. GiveDirectly is recommended by ‘The Life You Can Save’ as being among the most impactful charities (that is, each donation goes as far as it possible can).

“But won’t they just blow the money?” – No.

As the research shows, people in need spend cash on medicine; livestock (cows, goats and chickens); school fees; water; solar lights; tin roofs; irrigation; and more. You can read the unfiltered, unedited stories of recipients on GiveDirectly’s newsfeed.

Sometimes it can feel like you donate money without being aware of what that donation can do. With GiveDirectly, the $1,000 USD target I am aiming for could:

  • provide $880 USD directly to recipients to use as they wish;
  • provide $840 USD directly to a refugee family in Uganda, in a first-of-its-kind pilot that delivers cash transfers to refugees to invest in rebuilding their lives; or
  • Provide 40 months of basic income to a recipient of GiveDirectly’s Universal Basic Income initiative.

Thank you!
